TILE SAWS
Tile saws, often called a ceramic tile saw, are used for cutting ceramic tile during home remodeling projects. They are often referred to as a wet saw because they use water along with the blade in order to cleanly cut the tile without cracking it. A wet saw is basically a table saw with a diamond blade and water injections for cutting tile. Most small ones are less than $100 and can be rented for small projects.
The more expensive models are purchased and used by professional tilers and can also have laser guided systems installed. Those are the really nice, upscale versions for heavy use tilers.
The tile saw is made by the top manufacturers such as MK, Craftsman and Dewalt. Replacement blades for tile saws are needed every so often, costing around $10 for a pack of 4.
It's important that you use sharp blades for all your tile cuts. Dulling blades will cause imperfect cuts and even crack the tile itself. Depending on how much you invested in each piece, those cracks could make your project very expensive. Cracked tile are not usable from an aesthetic standpoint.
Broken blades can be a big problem, not only for safety reasons but also convenience and possibly damaging the tile. You must be gentle but direct with the tile as you feed it into the blade. Excessive pressure will raise the potential for broken blades.
We have a few tips to help keep your tiling project safe and productive.
- Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from shards
- Measure your cuts carefully, more than once, so as not to make a mistake
- Corners and going around objects can be difficult. Measure and cut one tile a time for best precision
Saws come in 7 inch, 10 inch, 14 inch and 18 inch options. The bigger you get the more expensive they are.
